Unsupported devices
What happens when a device has no GPU-compressed texture format, and how to detect it.
The runtime uses GPU-compressed textures to keep memory low. Practically every current phone and desktop browser supports them. On a device without them, the runtime does not fall back to uncompressed memory: each element shows its still picture, every play resolves at once, and your game carries on.
if (!gs.animated) console.info('Stills only on this device');The WebGPU renderer
The runtime draws with WebGL. A PixiJS application started with preference: 'webgpu' runs as on a device without compressed textures: every element shows its still picture and every play resolves at once. Keep PixiJS's default renderer, or set preference: 'webgl', to see the animations.
PixiJS versions
Every PixiJS 8.x from 8.0.5 to 8.22.0 plays the animations (tested 2026-10-06: loaded, animated, every play resolved, no errors). PixiJS v7 and older are not supported.
